Work with us

Who we are, what we do

The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers performs work that touches the lives of every Queenslander every day. With over 700 staff in more than 30 offices across the state, we are committed to delivering for Queensland communities.

Our Local Government team supports Queensland’s 77 councils to operate effectively and deliver positive community outcomes. This includes providing expert engineering and project management advice, capital and operating grants to support priority infrastructure projects and services, and guidance on governance and financial management matters; and administering the Local Government Act 2009, City of Brisbane Act 2010 and Local Government Electoral Act 2011.

Our Water teams work across a wide range of essential areas.

We are the dam safety regulator, ensuring more than 100 referable dams throughout the state are safe and operating as intended. We also keep a close eye on the future, assessing bulk water needs across the state and anticipating future demand based on population growth, climate change, and emerging industries.

We are the drinking water regulator, ensuring that the local government water service providers throughout Queensland are delivering safe, reliable drinking water for their communities.

We are responsible for the sustainable and efficient allocation and use of water throughout Queensland, ensuring the needs of the environment, water users and communities are met securely and we manage more than 40,000 water entitlements across the state.

Our Community Recovery team plays a critical role in Queensland’s disaster response. They deliver personal, social and emotional support, psychological services, personal financial hardship assistance and other community supports and services following natural disasters and critical incidents affecting Queensland communities.

Our Minister’s portfolio also includes volunteers, and the department supports this function in a variety of ways.

What we value

Our department values a respectful, collaborative and supportive culture. Our Behaviours Charter is a collection of guiding principles, shaped by the people who work here, that spells out the great working environment we want to create and maintain.

These principles include:

  • collaboration
  • inclusivity
  • respect
  • authenticity
  • having fun and celebrating our achievements.

Our commitment to First Nations peoples

The department is committed to respectful, constructive and fruitful partnerships with Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples. About one-third of our staff have roles that deliver services or work directly with Aboriginal peoples, Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities, and our department has a long history of engaging with First Nation’s peoples. We aim to work inclusively and respectfully with First Nations peoples across Queensland and move towards a genuine pathway of co-design in our work.

Our commitment to diversity

Inclusion and diversity are at the heart of who we are and what we do. We actively support our people to bring their whole selves to work.

Our inclusion and diversity networks provide a safe and supportive space where you can connect, contribute, and celebrate your unique identity. Whether you’re passionate about LGBTQ+ inclusion, gender equity, multiculturalism, disability, or neurodiversity, you’ll find opportunities to collaborate with others and drive meaningful change across our department.

We are proud members of Pride in Diversity, Australia’s leading LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion program, and are participating in the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI) benchmarking process. Our goal is to achieve bronze accreditation by 2025, demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement in LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Our Deputy Director-General of Water, Jarrod Crowley-Grimmond, serves as the Executive Champion for LGBTQ+ inclusion. He is the champion of initiatives that support equality and respect across our department.

At DLGWV, you’ll join a workplace where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is championed, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
